Cycling Advocacy Committee

The Cycling Advocacy Committee is committed to working towards a safe and enjoyable

cycling network for Campbell Riverites of all ages and abilities.

The bike racks have arrived - now for the volunteers!

One of the obstacles to riding a bicycle downtown is the lack of safe and secure bike parking. The Cycling Advocacy Committee would like to change that.

To that end we’ve acquired some portable bike racks and fencing in order to provide free bike parking for public events around the city. We’re going to start with the Sunday Market that takes place at Spirit Square throughout the summer. Our goal is to provide a useful service - but also to connect with people who make use of their bikes for recreation and/or transportation.

Can you help us?

Starting on Sunday, June 4, and lasting until mid-September, we’ll need two volunteers to staff the bike valet service from 9:30 to 2:30 every Sunday. We can offer volunteers any of these options:
• a two and a half hour shift (9:30 - 12:00; 12:00 - 2:30)
• A full shift (9:30 to 2:30)
• One of the above options once a month
• One of the above options just once

Is this a contribution that you feel you could make?

If you’d like to help make Campbell River a friendlier place for cycling and could spare some time, please send an email to advocacy@rivercitycycle.ca Let us know when you’re available and we’ll hammer out a schedule and get back to you.

Cycling Advocacy Newsletter

For the past few years the club’s Cycling Advocacy Committee has been active lobbying City Council, working with City Staff and trying to encourage a conversation about how active transportation can make for a healthier, more sustainable and more liveable community.

If you’re someone who would like to be better informed about these issues and have a chance to contribute to this conversation, and you’ll receive a monthly newsletter with the latest developments in cycling infrastructure.

We’re building a cycling culture - one newsletter at a time!

Supporting Active Transportation in Campbell River:

Responses from Campbell River Mayoral and Council Candidates

Ahead of the 2022 Civic Election, the River City Cycle Club’s Cycling Advocacy Committee reached out to local candidates via their publicly available email addresses in order to explore their perspectives on Active Transportation in our city.

We asked the candidates to respond to the following question in 150 words or less:

The 2012 Official Sustainable Community Plan lists the following goals for the year 2020:

  • At least 12% of all trips to work in Campbell River are made by walking, cycling or transit

  • A safe, connected network of bicycle facilities has been developed

  • Short driving trips are reduced, with residents meeting many of their daily needs by walking, cycling and transit

Given the City’s lack of measurable progress toward these goals and in light of a growing climate emergency, what specific actions would you support to increase active transportation in Campbell River? (150 words or fewer).

Below we provide candidate responses received via email before October 1, 2022. Responses appear in alphabetical order and have been edited for brevity when longer than 150 words.

To all candidates – thank you for your commitment to our city!

Sincerely,

Cycling Advocacy Committee

River City Cycle Club
